We are the Hawthorne Girls' Running Club. We are a group of 35 4th and 5th grade girls who love to run and want to make a difference. Most of us are minority students growing up in low-income families. We practice every Wednesday and Thursday in the spring and celebrate the end of our season by running the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K and doing a neighborhood pizza Fun Run with amazing pizzas donated by the Roman Candle Pizza. We work hard to raise money by working at the Twilight 10K Water Station in the spring. We also receive private donations and partner with Movin' Shoes so that we each get a new pair of running shoes.
Our coaches are teachers and nurses who work at Hawthorne Elementary. They do a mini-lesson every practice before we run to teach us how to make healthy choices. Our lessons focus on how to live a mentally and physically healthy lifestyle. We also learn about self-esteem, self-imagine, gossip, bullying, healthy relationships, and the value of community.
